Academics
Pioneer Christian School is a member of the Wisconsin Association of Christian Schools (WACS) and the American
Association of Christian Schools (AACS). The administrative and instructional staff of Pioneer Christian School
are well qualified to perform their roles. Achievement tests administered annually show our student body to be
performing well above the national average. Students are being well-prepared for the college level and for future
service for the Lord.
Based on the biblical mandate in I Corinthians 10:31 that in whatever we do we are to do all to the glory of God,
It is our goal, as an institution, to strive for excellence in every academic endeavor as well as in our extracurricular
activities. Our pursuit of excellence is for the purpose of glorifying the Lord.
At Pioneer Christian School, Jesus Christ is recognized as the Source of all knowledge and wisdom and according to
Proverbs 10:14, “Wise men lay up knowledge”. The Bible is the guide for life; therefore, Bible study is a recognized
part of the curriculum of Pioneer Christian School. Our program of discipleship includes personal Bible study, Bible
class, chapels, and student accountability partners, in addition to godly guidance and counsel from teachers. Spiritual
growth is nurtured in an environment of loving relationships.
In the elementary school, the BJU Press curriculum (developed by Bob Jones University) is used. This curriculum places
a strong emphasis on phonics, reading comprehension, and mathematics. The curriculum is enhanced by a Christian
philosophy we believe to be necessary for our students.
The high school program is a college preparatory curriculum with textbooks selected to best meet our goals in each
subject area. Where possible, textbooks by Christian publishers are used. Music, speech, and computer skills, along
with other electives, are available to our high school students. A well-rounded sports program is also offered with
competition in soccer, volleyball, and basketball.
A curricular distinctive of PCS is our commitment to foreign language learning beginning in Kindergarten. Our
well-qualified language team has developed a program of teaching our students to be “proficient” in speaking Spanish
when they graduate from Pioneer. We believe that this distinctive will equip our students to minister to a broader
spectrum of people groups and will help to broaden their view of the world that they have been commissioned to reach
with the Gospel of Christ.
Fine Arts Program
The fine arts program at PCS is developed to teach students how to identify quality pieces of music and works of art.
Students are intentionally exposed to quality music, art, and speech. Opportunities to be a member of an ensemble or
drama group are often ministry-driven. That is, the purpose for participating is to gain experience in using
developed gifts and abilities to be a blessing to others, not to gain the approval of performance judges alone. Our
choir prepares a variety of music for several concerts and competitions throughout the year. Those who choose to
join a musical group realize that their presence during practice and at the time of performance is critical to the
success of the choir or group. Attendance by group members is therefore required at all concerts and competitions.
All students in grades 7-9 are required to participate in choir as a 3-day class. Handchimes will be an elective
course for grades 7–12 as a 2-day class. Handchimes and vocal ensemble groups may require auditions.
Academic Testing
For the past two years Pioneer Christian School has administered the Stanford Achievement Test to students in
grades K-11. Achievement tests are an evaluative tool to help us determine strengths and weaknesses in our program
and to give us a measure of overall progress over several years. The results of our testing are compared to two
national groups: the National Group (all schools taking the test) and the AACS (American Association of Christian
Schools) Group. We are given a percentile ranking compared to the schools in these two groups. I am happy to report
that the percentile ranking of our school rose considerably in both national groups. Below are the total school
results.
|
National Group |
AACS Group |
| 2008 Percentile Ranking |
77.5 |
55.0 |
| 2009 Percentile Ranking |
82.4 |
61.2 |
We are encouraged by the improvement in our students’ achievements, but are certainly not satisfied. We will
continue to work on improving the quality of academics at PCS. Thank you, students and parents, for all your hard
work this school year!
Pioneer Beginnings
There is something very exciting and special about beginning school. How our children begin the educational journey does seem to have significance in respect to their future success. We praise the Lord for the good foundation that has been built in our kindergarten students over the past two years. Students have successfully developed the enabling skills of reading and writing, and other skills that have prepared them for 1st grade and beyond.
We are delighted to be able to offer our families an expansion of our program to include a K-4 program on Tuesday and Thursday mornings starting this fall. The class will be held in conjunction with the K-5 program; however the K-5 students will experience specific instruction at their ability level for much of the K-4 school day. Studies have shown that students with a K-4 background have demonstrated a greater level and success as they moved through other grades. We are confident that we can offer a course of instruction and activity that will help your child to have a good beginning at an affordable cost.
