Secondary Student Storage Solutions

I know many of you have already been school supply shopping, and some of you are still planning to go in the next few weeks. I hope you are finding everything that you need, and if you have any questions about any of the items on the school supply list, please feel free to ask me about that. You can contact me at 715-324-6999 ext. 4017 or kbeeson@pioneercs.org .

The learning lab is being set up and is almost ready for this coming year. It is exciting to see the progress in the room, and I think the students will really enjoy their new space. The room is freshly painted, the desk spaces and computers are set up, and the Goyak girls have done a great job decorating the walls with some items that are distinctly PCS.

As I was looking around this past week, I thought of a few things to make you aware of ahead of time. Each student will  have his or her own desk space for the year. The students can decorate it and make it their “own” space, so they can be thinking ahead about what they would like to do in that area. Also, storage is something to think about. We do have coat hooks for coats and book bags outside the classroom; however, storage of pens, pencils, books, calculators, and paper, etc., at each student’s desk needs some attention. Each of you might want to provide something that can be put underneath the desk in which to store textbooks and workbooks. I did see some sturdy plastic milk crates recently at Walmart that were only $3.47. If you have some sort of small shelves or bins, that might also work. You might even have something around your home that would work. The solution is up to you. This would certainly prevent a leaning tower of books from falling to the ground during the school day and would keep each textbook readily available for use in the lab or for heading to another classroom. Maximum outside dimensions would be 25” high x 14” wide (to fit properly under the desk and still give ample room for the chair and for comfort). The minimum inside dimensions would be 12” x 12” (to fit textbooks and workbooks).  Maximum depth is 22”. Again, this is optional and only a suggestion. We simply ask that whatever you choose, that the item be presentable and in good repair. Other things to think about might be a pencil/pen holder and other organizing items for the desktop.

We are striving for a neat, organized learning lab for the students so they can more efficiently use their resources and their time. Whatever simple, organizational tools you can provide for your student would be wonderful.

I am getting excited for the 2011-2012 school year to begin!

Viruses that cause colds and the flu seem to be quite contagious in our homes and school at certain times of year, and this is a type of contagion that we do not look forward to, nor seek, as it yields unfavorable results. Although a cold, or especially the flu, can affect us severely, these adverse effects are usually relatively short-lived and soon forgotten as we venture back into “normal” life as a healthy person.

Have you ever wondered which toothpaste gets teeth the whitest, what design of paper airplane flies the best, which paper towel is the most absorbent, if electricity helps plants to grow better, what a tire’s air pressure affects, which type of egg tastes best, which sports drink provides the most nutrients, what cleaning method is most effective on germs, whose fingerprints are the most similar, why you cook some food in salt water, or whether spices provide preserving qualities to food?

Well, Science Fair evening is finally upon us.  At times, I am sure it felt as if this time would never come, and the project would never end.  The students (and I know many parents, too) have put a lot of time and effort into these projects.  They have done a great job, and I hope your entire family can come Tuesday evening to enjoy the “fruits of your labors.”  Overall, I hope this year’s science fair will bring glory to God through the exploration of His great works and through the hard work of the students, His children.

Here is a schedule of events for Tuesday evening, February 8, 2011.  Students should plan to wear regular school dress for the evening.

6:30-7:00 PM – Students need to arrive around 6:25 to the auditorium and stand by their displays. Parents and visitors will visit the displays between 6:30-7:00 PM  and are encouraged to ask the students questions about their projects.

7:00-7:30 PM -  Awards Ceremony in the auditorium
