When you look back over the course of a season, it is much easier to see God’s providence at work than when looking forward into the unknown. Last year, our PCS guys took third place in the WACS tournament. I remember thinking how much I was looking forward to this season as I had all of my returning starters and a team led by upperclassmen. Just what every coach wants. And then things seemed to unravel from a human perspective: debilitating injuries to three of my players and grade struggles—not exactly the preferred path to a successful season. Read More ►

As Christmas break began for the PCS student body, the PCS basketball teams geared up for their closing game for the year 2010. The Twin City Eagles in Marinette, WI hosted the evening for the junior high boys, varsity girls and varsity boys teams.
The junior high boys began the evening’s events with an exciting game with the Falcons closing the first quarter trailing 13-2. The PCS team shook off the nerves that came with playing their first game with an 8-0 run in the 2nd quarter. The teams stayed close during the entire second half but a key shot by Paul Casteel in the 4th quarter “sealed the deal” for PCS with a final score of 22-21. Austin Glanzer lead the team with 12 points followed by Jacob Cherney with 10 points.
The varsity girls took the court knowing the Eagle girls were experienced and fast. As the PCS girls began the game, they kept their theme for the year of “serving” being their main goal and being content with results the Lord allowed them to have. The team pushed hard, stayed focused, and were hungry to see a victory. At half time the score was tied @ 37. The third quarter had the Lady Falcons down with a 14-7 run but a 4th quarter 23-14 turn around allowed the team to finish with their first win of the season…67-65. Courtney Goyak had a strong game with 40 points and 14 rebounds but it was the contribution of the WHOLE team serving one another that made this victory sweet.
The evening closed with the varsity boys playing a team that the PCS boys have not won against in over two years. The battle was tough with the PCS boys only being able to out score the Twin City Eagle boys in one quarter. Austin Glanzer and Antonio Patz both had 12 points but the PCS boys fell short with a 63-53 loss. The boys are already setting their sights to meeting this team once again towards the close of the season.

The season opened with the Falcons hosting the Bay City Bobcats. The girls’ varsity team started the season with intensity, great effort and an improved team in many ways from last year. Even though the game did not end with a win on the score board, the effort put forth was 100% and a hunger to continue to improve. “Great job!” to the Falcon Ladies from Coach Goyak.
As far as the varsity boys’, their first home game was a hard-fought victory as the Falcons defeated the Bay City Bobcats 33-27. Though being down 13-8 after the first quarter, the Falcons held the Bobcats scoreless in the second quarter and finished the fourth quarter with a 10-3 run. Everyone contributed to the victory, from the bench to the guys on the floor. Antonio Patz led the Falcon surge with four 3-pointers, ending with 14 points and 5 rebounds.

The Falcons entered this weekend’s WACS state tournament as the third seed and faced Calvary of Menomonee Falls in the semifinal game. Our guys established control early with dominant possession, but did not receive many scoring chances in the first half. Throughout the second half, our defense continued their stellar play, limiting Calvary to only a couple of shots and shutting down their scoring threat. About halfway into the second half, Jared Kimbrough beat a few defenders and found himself alone in the penalty area. He calmly slotted home the goal that would be the only score of the game. We were pleased with our control of the game, excellent defense, and ball possession; but we also knew that we would face a tough test in the championship game on Saturday against Bay City Baptist.
The championship game began with an early goal from Bay City. This knocked us back onto our heels for a while, and the Bobcats took advantage with another goal about 15 minutes into the first half. Despite dominating the remainder of the half and generating many scoring chances, we could not break through to get on the scoreboard.
As the second half began, we started to play with a little more desperation and intensity. However, Bay City would score off a free kick following a questionable call and follow that with another goal with about 20 minutes to go. However, our guys did not give up! With some re-focused direction, we continued pressuring their defense. Substitute Jake Franczek scored about 2 minutes after entering the game, and Marco Patz aimed a corner kick into the far netting with about a minute to play to cut the final deficit to 4-2.
As I’ve mentally reviewed this tournament over the last few hours, it seems to be a microcosm of our entire season: periods of dominant ball possession resulting in lots of scoring, interspersed with segments of difficulty and loss of mental discipline. From the beginning of the season, we struggled to put together a full game of consistent, well-played soccer. The style of soccer we strive for focuses on ball-control, possession, quick passes, and lots of movement off the ball. The guys on our team have proven to be very good at using this style to generate scoring chances and really take over a game. It always thrills me to finish a game knowing that we imposed our style of “Falcon soccer” on the opponent; but playing this style throughout every game all season long requires a tremendous amount of mental discipline! The hope that I have for the future of PCS soccer lies in our guys’ continued improvement to master this style.
We have witnessed some tremendous individual performances this season from each of the guys on the team. I’m looking forward to our Athletic Banquet, when we’ll be able to review those performances in more depth. I especially appreciate Weston Random and Antone Goyak, Jr., for their continued presence and encouragement during practices and games despite suffering season-ending injuries midway through the season. Chris Barribeau, Josh Cudnohufsky, Luke Kaminski, and Antone will be missed greatly next year. They gave their all to this team, and all the guys are thankful for these seniors and their contribution.
I am grateful for all the hard work that the players invested into this season. I am also grateful for the time and money that the parents and fans spent supporting our team, and the trust that everyone has placed in me to serve as coach for these guys. It is a role that I take very seriously and thoroughly enjoy, and my prayer is that the Lord will continue to use the circumstances of this season to shape each one of us into the likeness of His Son.
Relentlessly pursuing God’s wisdom,
Coach Moses
